First Time Renting a Car in Melbourne? Here's Everything You Need to Know

Renting a car for the first time can feel daunting. There's a lot of jargon, excess, bond, damage waivers, roadside assistance, and some rental companies aren't exactly known for making things simple. The good news: it's genuinely not complicated once someone explains it properly. Here's everything you need to know before you hire your first car in Melbourne.

First, the licence. If you hold a full Australian driver's licence (not a learner or P-plate licence), you're good to go. International visitors can hire with a foreign licence, but if it's not in English you'll need a certified translation or an International Driving Permit. The key word in all cases is 'full', provisional licences (P1, P2, Ps) are not accepted by most hire companies, including Savvy Car Hire. You must be at least 21 years old.

Next, insurance. This is where a lot of first-timers get confused. Most car hire companies separate their base rate from insurance, then sell it to you at the counter. At Savvy Car Hire, Standard Protection is included in every hire, you don't buy it separately. What you're responsible for is the 'excess': the maximum amount you'd pay out of pocket if the car is damaged in an accident. Our Standard Protection excess is $2,000 for drivers 25 and over, or $3,000 for drivers 21 to 24. You can reduce that to $800 or $1,500 respectively with Excess Reduction at $30/week ($10 a day on daily hires). Most customers on their first hire go with Standard Protection. If you have an incident, Savvy Car Hire handles the claim, you just pay the excess.

The security bond is separate from insurance. When you pick up the car, we take a $400 bond, this is held as security and returned to you approximately two weeks after you bring the car back, provided there are no outstanding charges. Unlike some companies that put a $3,000 to $5,000 hold on your credit card, our bond is a straightforward $400 payment.

Picking up is simple. We'll confirm your ID and licence, go through the Vehicle Inspection Report together (documenting any existing marks on the car so neither party is confused later), hand over the keys, and run through the basics, fuel type, where to find the spare tyre, how to work the windscreen wipers. Returning is the same process in reverse: we inspect the car, confirm the fuel level, and process your bond refund. The whole thing takes about 15 minutes each way.

A few practical tips for first-timers: always take photos of the car before you drive away, even if you've signed the inspection report. Fill the tank before returning, our fuel policy requires you to return with a full tank, otherwise we charge $2.20/litre to refill it.
