Melbourne is one of the world's great event cities. The Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup, AFL Grand Final, Australian Open, White Night, and Moomba all draw massive crowds, and they all put serious pressure on the car hire market. If you're visiting Melbourne for a major event, or if you're a local who suddenly needs a car during event season, here's what you need to know about booking.

The Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix (March, Albert Park) is the single biggest crunch point for Melbourne car hire. The entire city fills up, rental cars disappear, and prices at the airport desks spike significantly. Book at least 4-6 weeks in advance if you're planning to hire during Grand Prix week. The same applies to the Australian Open (January), which brings tens of thousands of visitors from interstate and overseas for two weeks.

AFL season runs March through September, with the Grand Final at the MCG every September. Finals weekends, especially the Grand Final, see enormous demand. If you're coming to Melbourne specifically for footy, lock in your hire well ahead. Melbourne Cup week in early November also tightens supply, especially for people wanting to drive to Flemington or do a day trip to the Yarra Valley wine country afterward.
